Akşener is facing the biggest leadership test of her political career
ANKARA – Months after Turkey’s opposition bloc was defeated in the May elections, İYİ Party officials continue to fight over alliance prospects moving forward. At the same time, allegations of intra-party corruption are only adding to the chaos.
According to İYİ Party sources who spoke with Turkey recap, İYİ Party Chair Meral Akşener is currently facing the "most difficult leadership test of her political career" and if she doesn’t make some radical moves, the party may soon diminish in size and influence.
In September, Akşener announced İYİ Party would field its own municipal candidates in all Turkish cities for the March 2024 local elections, signaling a clear break from its strategy in 2023 elections, during which it did not compete for positions with the Republican People’s Party (CHP).
